How to Create Great Business Cards

It takes 10 seconds for your potential client to build up a long-lasting opinion about you. It sounds cruel but that is a fact – people judge the book by its cover. Business cards can make or break a client’s first impression of your company. And you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Business cards are the essential part of any good marketing plan. It’s always a good idea to have some self-promotional material with you. Here’s a list of things to keep in mind when creating the perfect business cards.

How to Create Great Business Cards

Card design

Choose a card design that is appropriate for your business. Your business card should be related to what you do. If you are a CEO expert don’t hand cards with sparkling cartoon doodles on them. If you have a toy making company, plain black-and-white card won’t catch anyone’s attention. People shouldn’t have to try to figure out who you are.

If you have a logo it’s a must to incorporate it in your card. A logo used consistently on business cards and other materials helps to establish a company’s identity.

Paper

The quality of your business card says a lot about you. The last thing you want to use is cheap paper. Use good paper. Quality matters.

Typography

This is a pretty important element in business card design. Fonts have a voice, so choose the one that represents who you are. Make sure that your text is readable. You don’t want your clients to have problem to read your web address or email. Make sure your text is in a clear readable font. You could also bring attention to your name or contact information by making it slightly bigger or bolder than the rest of the text on your card.

Uniqueness

Your business card should stand out from the crowd. You need to make your card recognizable and unique. If you want to play it safe you can choose a business card with rounded corners. If you want to have extravagant and wildly original cards you can choose the ones in shape of a pepper shaker or cheese grater, the ones that fold into miniature box or into Swiss knife. Creativity has no boundaries – except the sum of money you want to spend.

Bonus tip

Include the essential info. This may sound like obvious advice, but you would be surprised how many people forgets this. Include your name, title, company name, address, phone number, e-mail and web site – that is a must. You could also include tagline or description of business or list of services or products that you offer – but be careful, you don’t want your business card to be crammed with text.
