What is a birthday time capsule?

Time capsule is a collection of meaningful items that are sealed away on a baby’s first birthday. It is then kept/preserved until the baby is older. Time capsule is like a snapshot in time – it holds historical records or items that represent the current time and culture.

How to create a time capsule?

Choose a box/container

Choose the right box/container for the type of time capsule you have in mind. Some of the best options are:

  • Metal tin: Metal storage box is sturdy and durable. It will protect the content from external elements and moisture. You can also use a cookie tin.
  • Plastic box: This is a secure and practical option. A sealable lid will help to keep the content safe.
  • Glass jar: Choose a decorative mason jar, with a tight-fitting lid. This is more aesthetic option than a plastic box, but if not stored properly, it may be prone to breakage.
  • Wooden box/chest: This is a great idea if you want a rustic feel/effect. Make sure to choose a box that has a secure latch. Consider lining the box with acid-free paper – this will help to preserve the items you put inside.

Decide what to include

Time capsule should contain meaningful items and mementos. Here are some of the items you should consider:

  • Photographs: Choose a couple of photos from your baby’s first year that show their personality. Include some photos with friends and family members. You can also add a cake smash photos, from your baby’s first birthday party. Don’t forget to write a note – date, milestone, names of the people who are present in the photos.
  • Handprints and footprints: Use non-toxic clay or ink to preserve a little handprint/footprint to commemorate how small the baby once was.
  • Personal items: Hospital bracelet, lock of hair, first pair of baby shoes, favorite toy, pacifier, blanket, baby outfit, mittens, socks…
  • Time-stamped memories: Include a newspaper, so your child can see the most significant events from the day of their birth. You can also include a sport or a fashion magazine.
  • Letters from friends and family members: At baby’s first birthday party, have the guests fill out birthday time capsule cards. They can write messages for your baby, birthday wishes, hopes and dreams, predictions for their future… Include those cards in the time capsule.
  • Index: Don’t forget to make a list of all the pieces included in the time capsule. Write an explanation of why those items were chosen.

Seal and store the time capsule

Humidity and moisture can damage the items in the time capsule – make sure to choose an airtight box. Place silica gel packets in the box or wrap items in a plastic bag before placing them in a time capsule. Store the capsule in a dry, cool, dark place. Capsule should also be protected from temperature fluctuations – avoid putting it in a place with a direct sunlight. Common choices are closets, basements or deposit boxes. Check on your time capsule periodically, to be sure there hasn’t been any damage to the outside of the container.

Time capsule opening

Most people preserve the time capsule until their baby turns 18, which allows them to reflect on the journey from childhood into adulthood. Time capsule can also be opened on a child’s 6th (kindergarten) or 13th (becoming a teen) birthday. Consider throwing a party and include close friends and family members who were a part of your child’s early years. Take photos of the event and ask the guests to fill the advice cards or a guest book.
