Weddings are a marathon, not a sprint. Beyond the wedding reception and ceremony, there are several more opportunities to bring loved ones together to celebrate. Here’s a list of wedding related parties and events.

Engagement party

Engagement party is a celebration of getting engaged. It usually occurs a couple of months after the proposal. Parents of the bride should host the event. You should invite wedding party members, close friends and both sides of the families.

Bridal shower

Bridal shower usually occurs 12 weeks before the wedding day. This is a daytime event, that includes fun activities and games. Bridal party or bride’s family members should host the event. Close friends and family members should be on the invite list. Guests should bring gifts and stick to the wedding registry.

Couples shower

This event should honor both the bride and groom. It can be a brunch, dinner or cocktail party. Close friend or family members should host the event. Close friends, siblings and both sets of parents should be on the invite list.

Bachelor party

Bachelor party is the only wedding related event where the groom is the center of attention. It’s a gathering held in honor of a man’s upcoming marriage. Best man should plan the event. Grooms best friends and close family members should be on the invite list. Bachelor activities often include golf, brewery tour, weekend in the woods.

Bachelorette party

Bachelorette party is a gathering held in honor of a woman’s upcoming marriage. Maid of honor should plan the event. Bride’s best friends, wedding party members and close family members should be on the invite list. Beyond hitting up bars and clubs, bachelorette activities often include spa activities, private fitness and yoga classes, outdoor picnics.

Bridal luncheon

Bridal luncheon (bridesmaid luncheon) is a Southern tradition. It’s an opportunity for the bride to gather with the members of her bridal party. This is a daytime event, that usually occurs a couple of days before the wedding. Someone close to the bride (mother, aunt, friend…) should host the event.

Rehearsal dinner

Rehearsal dinner occurs the night before the wedding. Family of the groom should host the event. Close family members, grandparents and the officiant should be on the invite list. Also, anyone who is participating in the wedding ceremony.

Welcome party

Welcome party is the event that occurs the night before the wedding. Family of the groom should host the event. This event includes fun activities and games – boat rides, walking tours, picnics…

Farewell brunch 

This event occurs the morning after the wedding. Parents of the couple should host the event. Close family members and wedding party should be on the invite list.
